Say you run a café in Leeds.
You've got a Facebook page, plenty of regulars and no website. Here's how your week with us would go, Monday to Monday. It's an example, not a real client, but it's how every build runs. Already got a website you're not happy with? The week goes the same way. We just start from that instead.
The yellow notes explain the technical words in plain English.
- MondayYou get in touch
- You send
- Your café's name and a link to your Facebook page. Two lines from your phone, between the lunch rush and closing.
- We do
- Read your Facebook page, your Google listing and your reviews, so we know what people already say about you. We reply the same working day.
- You see
- A short reply from Dale asking when suits for a 15-minute call.
Google listing (Google calls it a Business Profile): the box with your map, hours and reviews that shows up when someone googles you.
- TuesdayDay 1
- You send
- Fifteen minutes on the phone after you close. What you sell, your prices, your hours, and whether people book a table or just turn up. Afterwards, a photo of your menu board, a few photos of the counter, and your logo if you have one.
- We do
- Take notes, and ask about anything we couldn't see on Facebook.
- You see
- Nothing yet. Go home.
Photos: the ones on your phone are fine. We sort out the sizes.
- WednesdayDay 2
- You send
- Nothing.
- We do
- Write the words and build the draft: home, menu and prices, about, find us, and contact. If people book a table, the Book button goes wherever they book now. If they ring, it rings you.
- You see
- Nothing. You're running a café.
Draft: a working copy of your site that only you can see. Nothing is public yet.
- ThursdayDay 3
- You see
- A private link to your whole site, on your phone. Your menu and prices, your hours, a map and a Book button. You haven't paid anything.
- You send
- What's wrong. “The flat white is £3.20, not £3. Swap the photo of the door.” That's normal.
- We do
- Make the changes the same day if we can.
Private link: a web address that only opens for the people you send it to. Google doesn't know it's there.
- FridayDay 4
- You send
- A yes, and half the price. For the Starter build that's £75.
- We do
- Sort out your web address. If you haven't got one, we help you pick one and register it in your name. Then we connect it to the site and check everything on old phones and new ones.
- You see
- The finished site, ready for Monday.
Web address (also called a domain): what people type to find you, like yourcafe.co.uk. It's registered to you, so it's yours.
Connecting it: pointing your web address at your new site, so typing it opens your pages.
- Saturday and SundayDays 5 and 6
- You send
- Nothing. They're your busiest two days, so we don't ask for anything.
- We do
- Nothing that needs you. The site is ready and waiting.
- MondayDay 7: live
- We do
- Switch it on, with the first year of hosting included, and send you your login.
- You see
- Your site, live at your own web address. Someone planning tomorrow's brunch at nine at night now finds your menu, your hours and a Book button.
- You do
- The scone has gone up 20p. You open the page where you change things, type £2.60 and press save. It takes two minutes. Then you pay the second half, £75.
Hosting: where your site lives, so it's there whenever someone types your address.
Login: a username and password for the page where you change things. Only you have it.
The padlock: the little lock next to your address. It tells people the site is safe to use, and it comes with the hosting.
What you needed
- A few messages from your phone
- One 15-minute call
- Some photos and your price list
- A yes
What you didn't need
- Any technical knowledge
- A web address before you started
- To pay before you'd seen it
What it cost
£150 for the Starter build: £75 on Friday when you said yes, and £75 on Monday when it went live. The first year of hosting is included. After that it's £5 a month, a monthly plan if you want us looking after it, or you take the files. See all the prices.
Get your free website check
Send us your web address, or tell us you haven't got one yet. Within two working days you get a short report in plain English: a score out of 100 and the three biggest fixes. No obligation.
- Your opening hours are in a photo. Google can't read a photo, so it can't show your hours.
- The menu is a PDF. It's slow to open on a phone, and most people give up.
- There's no Book button at the top. People have to scroll to the bottom to find your number.
